The questions, answered

Ready to actually start?

If you have read enough and want to learn the Portugal dialect properly, these are the pages worth your time: the best app to learn European Portuguese, the wider European Portuguese learning app, and European Portuguese flashcards with native audio. All three teach the Portugal dialect and nothing else, checked before it reaches you. For the difference between the dialects, the European Portuguese overview is a good neutral primer.

"Most people arrive with the same handful of questions and the same wrong app. Answer the questions honestly and the right choice becomes obvious."

Frequently asked questions

Which apps actually teach European Portuguese, not Brazilian?

Practice Portuguese, Memrise's separate Portugal course, Pimsleur's European audio course, and TangoLango. Duolingo, Babbel, and Rosetta Stone are Brazilian only (checked July 2026). More detail on whether there's an app that teaches European Portuguese.

Can I learn European Portuguese for free?

Yes. RTP's free programmes and podcasts, Practice Portuguese's free podcast feed, and Memrise's community Portugal decks will take you a long way for nothing. See where to learn European Portuguese for free.

How different is European Portuguese from Brazilian?

Same written language, but the pronunciation, the pronouns (Portugal's tu vs Brazil's voce), and many everyday words differ enough that a Brazilian course leaves you lost in a real Lisbon conversation. See is European Portuguese different from Brazilian Portuguese.
