Babbel European Portuguese: What It Actually Teaches
Babbel European Portuguese is not a course you can take. Babbel's single Portuguese course teaches Brazilian Portuguese, with Brazilian voices and Brazilian vocabulary, and Babbel says as much on its own pages (checked July 2026). As a course it is polished and effective, so if Brazil is your destination it is a reasonable pick. For a life in Lisbon, Porto or the Algarve it trains the wrong accent and everyday words, and there is no European track to switch into. That mismatch is the whole reason you are on this page.

The short answer
Babbel does not teach European Portuguese. Its Portuguese course page and its own guide to the European versus Brazilian difference, which signs off with "Learn (Brazilian) Portuguese today", make the focus plain (checked July 2026). To be fair, Babbel is a genuinely good app: tight fifteen-minute lessons, clear explanations, and review that uses speech recognition. All of that is aimed at Brazilian Portuguese. Point it at Portugal and you are drilling the wrong pronunciation and the wrong everyday words, with no way to correct the dialect from inside the app.

Why the dialect gap matters
Brazilian and European Portuguese read almost the same on the page and split apart the moment someone speaks, which is exactly where daily life happens. European Portuguese swallows unstressed vowels, so a sentence you would read easily sounds like a blur out loud. Portugal leans on tu where Babbel's Brazilian course drills você, and half the everyday nouns differ: autocarro not ônibus for bus, telemóvel not celular for phone, comboio not trem for train. Do six months of Babbel's Brazilian course and you will still miss what the clerk at the Finanças just said. The European Portuguese overview and the Instituto Camões, the state body that sets the Portugal standard, both document the split.
Choose Babbel if / choose TangoLango if
Choose Babbel if you are headed to Brazil, or you want a classic structured course and do not mind that the dialect is Brazilian. Its lessons are well built and its explanations are clear. For that job it earns its price.
Choose TangoLango if you live in or are moving to Portugal and need the real dialect. TangoLango teaches European Portuguese only, checks every sentence for the dialect before you see it, speaks it in native EU-PT voices, and builds flashcards from your own week: the landlord, the pharmacy, the AIMA appointment. If you only wanted the quick fact, here is whether Babbel teaches European Portuguese; if you are comparing the whole field, see the best European Portuguese apps ranked, plus what Memrise offers for the Portugal dialect and the Duolingo European Portuguese question.
"Babbel is a good app that quietly teaches the wrong Portuguese for Portugal. I would rather tell you that on day one than sell you six months of a Brazilian accent you will have to unlearn in Lisbon."
Frequently asked questions
Does Babbel teach European Portuguese or Brazilian Portuguese?
Brazilian. Babbel's single Portuguese course is Brazilian Portuguese, taught by Brazilian voices, by Babbel's own account (checked July 2026). There is no separate European (Portugal) track to switch to.
Do any apps teach European Portuguese?
Yes. Practice Portuguese is the strongest structured course, Memrise has a European Portuguese track with native-speaker clips, and TangoLango teaches the Portugal dialect only while building cards from your own daily life.
Is European Portuguese very different from Brazilian Portuguese?
In writing they are close; in speech they diverge a lot. Different pronunciation, different pronoun habits (tu versus você), and different everyday vocabulary. For living in Portugal, the European dialect is the one you need.
Is Babbel worth it for Portuguese?
For Brazilian Portuguese, yes, it is a well-made course. For European Portuguese it teaches the wrong accent and vocabulary, so it is the wrong tool if Portugal is your goal.
