Does Duolingo Teach European Portuguese?
Does Duolingo teach European Portuguese? No. Duolingo's only Portuguese course is Brazilian Portuguese, and there is no separate Portugal (European) course. As of July 2026, none has been announced. That gap matters more than it sounds: European and Brazilian Portuguese differ in pronunciation, in pronouns (Portugal uses tu where Brazil uses você), and in everyday words (a bus is an autocarro in Lisbon, an ônibus in Rio). Finish the Brazilian course and you can read a Portugal menu, but you will still miss what the clerk just said and reach for the wrong vocabulary. You can confirm the current list on Duolingo's own courses page.
If you want the language Duolingo does cover, it is a genuinely good habit builder. The gap here is only the dialect, and no in-app setting switches it. For the fuller picture of what the course does and does not include, see whether Duolingo has European Portuguese.
I did a thousand days of an app before I realised it had taught me the wrong country's Portuguese. Nobody flags it. Check the dialect before you start, not a year in.
