Is Babbel Portuguese Brazilian or European?

Is Babbel's Portuguese Brazilian or European? Brazilian. Babbel's Portuguese course teaches the Brazilian variety, taught by Brazilian voices and built on Brazilian vocabulary and grammar. Babbel says so on its Portuguese course page, and its own guide to the European vs Brazilian difference spells out the split (checked July 2026). There is no separate Portugal (European) track to switch to. If your destination is Brazil, that is a match. If it is Portugal, Babbel drills the wrong accent and the wrong everyday words, so you will practise celular when the shop sign says telemovel and onibus when the stop reads autocarro.

Babbel is a well-structured course, so the issue is fit, not quality. A Brazilian course teaches real Portuguese, just not the version spoken in Lisbon or Porto. Before you decide either way, it is worth knowing whether Babbel is a fair buy for Portuguese at all: here is whether Babbel is worth it for Portuguese.

Babbel is honest about it in their own docs: the Portuguese course is Brazilian. The trouble is nobody reads the docs before they buy, then wonders why Porto sounds foreign.
