Is Duolingo Portuguese Brazilian or From Portugal?

Is Duolingo's Portuguese Brazilian or from Portugal? Brazilian. Duolingo's single Portuguese course teaches the Brazilian variety, with Brazilian audio, Brazilian spelling, and Brazilian vocabulary. There is no Portugal (European) course, and no in-app setting to switch, which you can verify on Duolingo's own courses page (checked July 2026). That matters if Portugal is your goal. The course will have you saying voce where Lisbon uses tu, celular where Portugal says telemovel, and onibus where the bus stop reads autocarro. On paper the two are the same language. Out loud, at speed, a Brazilian course leaves you guessing at a Porto accent.

The written overlap fools a lot of people into thinking one course covers both countries. It does not, because daily life happens out loud, and that is where the two dialects split. If you want the yes-or-no on the course covering Portugal at all, here is whether Duolingo teaches European Portuguese.

One Portuguese course, and it is Brazilian. That is fine if you are headed to Rio. If you are headed to Lisbon, you are learning the wrong accent and half the wrong words.
