Is Duolingo Good for European Portuguese?

Is Duolingo good for European Portuguese? Not really. Duolingo's Portuguese course is Brazilian, so for life in Portugal it drills the wrong accent, the wrong pronouns (você instead of the tu people use here), and Brazilian vocabulary. Its tap-based lessons also do little for the skill expats struggle with most: understanding fast, real speech. As of July 2026 there is no European Portuguese course, so there is no in-app way to switch dialects. Duolingo is a polished habit builder for the languages it covers. For Portugal it is the wrong starting point, and its course page shows the single Brazilian option.

The deeper question is not effort, it is fit. You can pour a year into Brazilian Portuguese and still stall on a Lisbon accent, because the sounds and half the words are different. If you first want the plain yes-or-no on the course itself, here is whether Duolingo teaches European Portuguese at all.

The problem was never that I wasn't trying. I was practising the wrong dialect and no one told me. Train your ear on the Portuguese you will actually hear on the street here.
